200-Hour Teacher Training FAQ
Overview
All of our programs are available both virtually and in-person. You can choose to either attend in-person at our studio in Asheville, NC or from the comfort of your home! You will learn the same content whether you are learning in-person or virtually. If you are typically attending in-person and need to change your attendance to virtual for a specific session, please let our Programs Coordinator know in advance via email.
Both programs have the exact same curriculum and staffing. The main difference is the pace of study. Some people prefer to learn while fully immersed in yoga, and others prefer to digest the information a little at a time, over the course of nine weekends in six months.
Our 4-Week Immersion is an intense experience of living, breathing, sweating, and dreaming yoga! This dynamic program works well for those who like to focus on one thing at a time or whose schedule allows them to devote four full weeks to the study of yoga. There is time after the training is finished to complete homework assignments.
Our 8-Weekend Program moves at slower pace, with time to absorb, assimilate, and bring insights from the classroom into your daily life between sessions, which is then followed by regrouping together during training weekends for problem solving, Q&A, and continuing our journey of yoga. This program works well for those who need to keep regularity in their daily working and family lives while going through the training program. All homework is due by the end of this program.

We offer our students a taste of many lineages in all of our programs. We consider them to be a non-biased, well-rounded, and eclectic yoga education. Our staff is certified in a variety of yoga schools including Vinyasa, Iyengar, Ashtanga, Anusara, Jivamukti, and Viniyoga, among others. By presenting different lineages of yoga, our hope is that students realize that many paths lead to the same goal, and can then decide what resonates most with them. Our educational goal is to help release the student of their conditioned educational expectations. We are not here to indoctrinate our students. This is a noncompetitive, open-hearted educational environment with an emphasis on personal growth, taught by exceptional leaders in the yoga field.
You must have at least six months of practice taking yoga classes from a live teacher in a classroom setting (no recorded or streamed classes). The experience in a live classroom setting is invaluable in preparing you to become a classroom teacher yourself. We don’t ask that you are super experienced, but just enough to understand how the classroom environment works. Some students have only six months of experience when they start the program, and some students have 20 years of teaching experience under their belt. We start with the basics and address so many layers of yoga that all needs are met, and our students will walk out with the confidence to teach yoga classes to the public.
- You have a desire to deepen your yoga practice and broaden your understanding of yoga philosophy.
- You’re ready to open your heart and learn all you need to know to become a yoga teacher.
- You’ve been practicing yoga consistently in a classroom for at least 6 months.
- You are 18 or older.
- Register and select the immersion or 8 weekend program you are interested in attending.

Yes! It will be helpful to have read, skimmed, or peruse several of the required readings. In addition, you will need to complete two different types of yoga classes and evaluate using the “Evaluation Form” which will be submitted through TalentLMS. You will also be asked to complete one additional assignment and details will be provided in your welcome email.
Yes, in addition to the required reading (see next question), there will be written assignments, evaluations, class observations, a daily practice journal, and student teaching assignments to be completed throughout the program. All homework details will be clearly explained during the first day of your training, but please understand that you will need to dedicate time outside of class hours to these assignments.
The following books will be actively referred to throughout the training, so it will be helpful to familiarize yourselves with them before the training starts. Please bring them with you every day of the training.
- The Heart of Yoga by Desikichar
- The Bhagavad Gita, Stephen Mitchell translation
- The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali by Swami Satchitananda
- Light on Yoga by BKS Iyengar
- Yoga Anatomy by Leslie Kaminoff
The following texts are recommended. They will not be actively referred to, but they will be helpful as supplemental texts.

- The Miracle of Mindfulness by Thich Nhat Hanh
If your dream is to teach, we believe there are opportunities out there for you! Many students find teaching prospects even before they complete either of our teacher training programs. Others search awhile before finding a good fit. Our caring staff will help brainstorm creative ideas with you during the program itself, discussing resumes, auditions, and private sessions. Asheville Yoga Center graduates teach everywhere from yoga centers, hospitals, schools, and churches to private businesses and homes.
No, unfortunately it is a closed event.
Not yet. Upon graduation day, Asheville Yoga Center will provide you with an Asheville Yoga Center Teaching Certificate (provided all homework and finances are completed). Then you will upload your AYC certificate to Yoga Alliance’s website and pay a membership fee to obtain your YA certification. We discuss Yoga Alliance (business and teaching as well) in an in-depth manner during the program so that you will be completely prepared to understand the process.
200-Hour Demographics & General Information
We have graduated over three thousand 18–73 year olds! The minimum age requirement is 18, and there is no maximum limit, as yoga is not influenced by age, gender, or religion. Regardless of your age and even past yoga experience, we start off covering the basics of alignment and anatomy so we can build off a solid foundation with sequencing and adjustments.
Trainings will have anywhere from 10 to 40 students in them. Many of our programs fill up, so don’t wait too long to enroll! If you are wanting to be in a smaller group, let us know, we can direct you to the programs that we feel will best suit your needs.
Yes, of course! Many of our students enroll in Asheville Yoga Center’s 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training Programs unsure of whether or not they will teach. There are countless ways to “teach” yoga. Numerous graduates go on to teach yoga classes, and others go on to teach one-on-one yoga sessions with individual students. All of our graduates go on to transform the world by shining their bright yoga lights in new ways.
This is a program in which you are required to participate in every session. A 100% attendance policy is strictly enforced. You are strongly urged not to register for a teacher training program knowing that you will need to miss any time. We begin on time. If you have three tardy arrivals or leave class early you may be suspended from the program, so please plan to log in promptly and stay for the full session.
It is important that you attend all sessions, so let us know as soon as possible if you cannot attend every session. Please note that there are transfer and cancellation fees. You will be required to have a daily practice five days a week (journal guidelines will be provided). The daily practice cannot be recorded before the start date of the program, but feel free to start a daily practice now. This must be completed during your training.
During your program, you will have additional reading assignments, writing assignments (papers from one to five pages long), class evaluations, quizzes, and one written exam. If you are not able to or choose not to finish your homework assignments during the program, you have 90 days to complete them.
You are more than welcome to register and enroll, but we do not recommend it. Whether or not you are new to yoga, this may not be the best time to dive into something as momentous as motherhood and a yoga teacher training program all at once. Yoga training requires many demands of your body, and so does pregnancy. To do both can be very stressful, and optimally, the baby grows without mama’s stress. We recommend revisiting the possibility once your baby is born and you are feeling the support to be away from family. Remember, growing a life inside of you is such a miraculous and precious experience, and our yoga teacher training program does completely different miraculous and precious things to your body as well. If you do enroll, please consider the timing of your delivery, as you will be held to the same attendance standards as students who are not pregnant.
Please email our Program Advisor to discuss. Thanks!
We suggest that you let your instructor(s) know about your observances so that you will not be asked to do anything in direct conflict with your beliefs. Please email us with any questions.
During our winter Immersions, (December, January, February and March), the two days off listed in the training schedule details need to remain open and you need to remain available for make ups on those days, in case of inclement weather. This means sometimes our regular class session is cancelled due to snow or ice, and we need to make it up on our day(s) off.
During our nine weekend trainings, if there are weekends scheduled over December, January, February or March, there may be a chance of cancellation. For this training, we have a built in a backup weekend for such an event. Please keep it free.
