200-Hour TT FAQs
What are the differences between 200 RYT 4-week immersion and 8-weekend courses?
Both programs have the exact same curriculum and staffing. The main difference is the pace of study. Some people prefer to learn while fully immersed in yoga, and others prefer to digest the information a little at a time, over the course of nine weekends in six months.
Our 4-Week Immersion is an intense experience of living, breathing, sweating, and dreaming yoga! This dynamic program works well for those who like to focus on one thing at a time or whose schedule allows them to devote four full weeks to the study of yoga. There is time after the training is finished to complete homework assignments.
Our 8-Weekend Program moves at slower pace, with time to absorb, assimilate, and bring insights from the classroom into your daily life between sessions, which is then followed by regrouping together during training weekends for problem solving, Q&A, and continuing our journey of yoga. This program works well for those who need to keep regularity in their daily working and family lives while going through the training program. All homework is due by the end of this program.

What lineage do your programs follow?
We offer our students a taste of many lineages in all of our programs. We consider them to be a non-biased, well-rounded, and eclectic yoga education. Our staff is certified in a variety of yoga schools including Vinyasa, Iyengar, Ashtanga, Anusara, Jivamukti, and Viniyoga, among others. By presenting different lineages of yoga, our hope is that students realize that many paths lead to the same goal, and can then decide what resonates most with them. Our educational goal is to help release the student of their conditioned educational expectations. We are not here to indoctrinate our students. This is a noncompetitive, open-hearted educational environment with an emphasis on personal growth, taught by exceptional leaders in the yoga field.
How much yoga experience do I need to register for the program?
You must have at least six months of practice taking yoga classes from a live teacher in a classroom setting (no recorded or streamed classes). The experience in a live classroom setting is invaluable in preparing you to become a classroom teacher yourself. We don’t ask that you are super experienced, but just enough to understand how the classroom environment works. Some students have only six months of experience when they start the program, and some students have 20 years of teaching experience under their belt. We start with the basics and address so many layers of yoga that all needs are met, and our students will walk out with the confidence to teach yoga classes to the public.
What prerequisites do I need to meet before registering?
- You have a desire to deepen your yoga practice and broaden your understanding of yoga philosophy.
- You’re ready to open your heart and learn all you need to know to become a yoga teacher.
- You’ve been practicing yoga consistently in a classroom for at least 6 months.
- You are 18 or older.
- Register and select the immersion or 8 weekend program you are interested in attending.
How does the registration process work?
We try to make it as simple as possible. After reading this FAQ list, if you still have questions you can contact our program director. Then, when confident, fill out the registration online, pay the full tuition amount, and that’s it! You will receive an immediate email of payment confirmation. After we have received your registration and enrollment fee, then a welcome packet will be provided via email within 10 business days.
I loved it so much I want to do it again. Can I get a discount?
Yes, many of us will experience a change of heart regarding why we came to yoga originally. Repeating a program and refreshing your knowledge with us can help support you to more deeply understand your full potential. You will receive a 40% discount off the currently advertised tuition if you repeat either training program, regardless of which program you attended the first time around. Signing up is super easy: register online, make a note on your application that you are eligible for the 40% refresher discount, reserve your space with a registration and enrollment fee, and you’re in! If you are already a Yoga Alliance certified teacher then you won’t have to do all the homework! Please email us with questions.
Virtual 200-Hour TT FAQs
What should I expect from a virtual training?
With virtual trainings now available, our Yoga Alliance certified 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training Program will give you the confidence and experience you need to start sharing your love of yoga with others. You will receive the same quality instruction through our virtual program as you would have in our in-person one.
Our unique mix of recorded sessions and live instructor-led sessions offers you the opportunity to learn the essential elements while also having the platform to interact directly with our knowledgeable instructors. There will be approximately a combination live interactive sessions with 24 hours of pre-recorded videos. Lots of online teacher trainings offer no live session where you get the opportunity to build community with your cohort and instructors, but you will get that opportunity at AYC – even in the virtual reality we all are learning to adapt to.
We use two platforms to host our trainings; TalentLMS and Zoom. TalentLMS is your hub of information. It will have access to Zoom links, handouts, homework, pre-recorded videos and more. You will work your way through your course and can track your progress through this platform. Zoom will be used for your live-stream sessions. You’ll follow along during instructor led lectures and practices while also breaking out into smaller groups for peer-based work.
What do I need to participate in a virtual training?
Please have the following available for your live stream course:
- A stable internet connection
- A yoga mat – check out our online boutique at shop.youryoga.com for an array of options
- Comfortable clothes to practice yoga and meditation every session
- Course materials which will be provided to you through TalentLMS
- Your copy of the Yoga Handbook
- A notebook and pen for taking notes
- If you have a block, blanket, bolster (or two) and strap, those items will be useful. If not, you can improvise with a thick book (for the block), any blanket or towel, couch cushions and a belt/tie.
- Cell phones should be turned off and distractions kept to a minimum.
- A camera and microphone set up. If you do not have a tablet or laptop with built in camera/mic, we would suggest buying a webcam to hook up to your computer. Attending on your cellphone will most likely not be sustainable.
Is this training pre-recorded or live streamed?
You need to be present for all live-streaming sessions as attendance is mandatory. It is important to us to build a strong sense of community through this training as we believe that creates an optimal learning environment. There are also some supplemental pre-recorded videos to view on your own time each week, approximately 24 hours in total that will need to be watched outside of the live stream sessions.
- Schedule for 8-Weekend Trainings:Friday: 5:00pm-9:00pm EST.
Saturday: 8:00am-12:00pm & 1:00pm-5:00pm EST.
Sunday: 8:00am-12:00pm & 1:00pm-5:00pm EST.
Schedule for 4-Week Immersion Trainings:Monday-Friday
8:00am-12:00pm and 1:00pm-5:00pm EST.
Will I be able to go back and watch recordings of the sessions or have access to reading materials?
In order to emulate the closest experience to an in-person training, we will not be providing video recordings of the sessions. It is mandatory that you are present during each session and take in the information as they naturally would. These trainings are not designed to have students memorize everything each instructor says, but rather to take in and write notes about information that is pertinent and resonates with you.
You will have access to your Talent LMS account 90 days after your training ends. In that time, you can download any handouts or readings you might want to your computer
200-Hour TT Financial Information
Are there scholarships or work study?
Partial scholarships may be available for each session depending upon enrollment. Please visit our Scholarships page for more information. Unfortunately, we do not offer work study for teacher trainings.
How much are transfer or cancellation fees before a training begins?
Please see our Cancellation and Transfer Policy for more details.
200-Hour TT Details, Attendance & Demographics
What is the average age of enrollees?
We have graduated over three thousand 18–73 year olds! The minimum age requirement is 18, and there is no maximum limit, as yoga is not influenced by age, gender, or religion. Regardless of your age and even past yoga experience, we start off covering the basics of alignment and anatomy so we can build off a solid foundation with sequencing and adjustments.
How many people are in a training?
Trainings will have anywhere from 10 to 40 students in them. Many of our programs fill up, so don’t wait too long to enroll! If you are wanting to be in a smaller group, let us know, we can direct you to the programs that we feel will best suit your needs.
Can I take this course if I’m not positive I want to become a yoga instructor?
Yes, of course! Many of our students enroll in Asheville Yoga Center’s 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training Programs unsure of whether or not they will teach. There are countless ways to “teach” yoga. Numerous graduates go on to teach yoga classes, and others go on to teach one-on-one yoga sessions with individual students. All of our graduates go on to transform the world by shining their bright yoga lights in new ways.
What if I have to miss part of a training?
I am pregnant. Can I still apply?
You are more than welcome to register and enroll, but we do not recommend it. Whether or not you are new to yoga, this may not be the best time to dive into something as momentous as motherhood and a yoga teacher training program all at once. Yoga training requires many demands of your body, and so does pregnancy. To do both can be very stressful, and optimally, the baby grows without mama’s stress. We recommend revisiting the possibility once your baby is born and you are feeling the support to be away from family. Remember, growing a life inside of you is such a miraculous and precious experience, and our yoga teacher training program does completely different miraculous and precious things to your body as well. If you do enroll, please consider the timing of your delivery, as you will be held to the same attendance standards as students who are not pregnant.
I am injured. Can I still apply?
Please email our Program Advisor to discuss. Thanks!
I am Jewish and I observe the Sabbath. What are the expectations of students responsibilities on Saturdays?
We suggest that you let your instructor(s) know about your observances so that you will not be asked to do anything in direct conflict with your beliefs. Please email us with any questions.
What is the curriculum covered during the training?
Students receive a detailed syllabus upon arrival, but generally there is about 50% asana and 50% lecture/discussion each day. At AYC our Yoga Alliance certified 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training Program meets or exceeds all the required standards set forth by Yoga Alliance in the areas of:
Techniques, Training, and Practice
Asana Foundations & Alignment Principles
Anatomy & Physiology
The History of Yoga
Business of Yoga
Additional Areas of Study
Intro to Ayurveda
What if there is inclement weather?
During our winter Immersions, (December, January, February and March), the two days off listed in the training schedule details need to remain open and you need to remain available for make ups on those days, in case of inclement weather. This means sometimes our regular class session is cancelled due to snow or ice, and we need to make it up on our day(s) off.
During our nine weekend trainings, if there are weekends scheduled over December, January, February or March, there may be a chance of cancellation. For this training, we have a built in a backup weekend for such an event. Please keep it free.

Read up to page 60 in Light on Yoga by Iyengar, and skim up to page 428. Read parts one, four, and eleven from The Yoga Handbook. Read up to (not including) Part 3 of Yoga: The Spirit and Practice of Moving Into Stillness. You will only need to bring The Yoga Handbook the first weekend (but feel free to bring your other books as well).
For the 3 week immersion, please read the following before the first day (we understand that this is not always possible, but please do your best): Light on Yoga, The Yoga Handbook (parts 1-4 and 11-14), Yoga: The Spirit and Practice of Moving into Stillness, The Heart of Yoga (the first half of the book), Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Back Care Basics, Yoga Anatomy, The Bhagavad Gita. The main texts you will need during the immersion are: The Yoga Handbook, The Bhagavad Gita, The Yoga Sutras, Yoga Anatomy, and Light on Yoga. You will only need The Yoga Handbook during the first few days of the training. Please feel free to bring all of your books if you wish.
How easy is it to find a job after certification?
If your dream is to teach, we believe there are opportunities out there for you! Many students find teaching prospects even before they complete either of our teacher training programs. Others search awhile before finding a good fit. Our caring staff will help brainstorm creative ideas with you during the program itself, discussing resumes, auditions, and private sessions. Asheville Yoga Center graduates teach everywhere from yoga centers, hospitals, schools, and churches to private businesses and homes.
Can I invite my family to the graduation?
No, unfortunately it is a closed event.
Do I get a Yoga Alliance Certificate when I graduate?
Not yet. Upon graduation day, Asheville Yoga Center will provide you with an Asheville Yoga Center Teaching Certificate (provided all homework and finances are completed). Then you will upload your AYC certificate to Yoga Alliance’s website and pay a membership fee to obtain your YA certification. We discuss Yoga Alliance (business and teaching as well) in an in-depth manner during the program so that you will be completely prepared to understand the process.
