Rediscovering Freedom: the Therapeutic Wisdom of Yoga with Doug Keller

A training-intensive for yoga teachers and inquiring students

‘Rediscovering Freedom’ seems like an apt theme to explore, particularly after the restrictions of the past couple of years. And this theme will have a practical, focused purpose for understanding therapeutic applications of yoga more deeply — particularly with regard to chronic pain patterns.

With both learning and doing, you’ll be given the tools to deepen your own practice and to gain confidence and insight for working with students. This is about making the most of the benefits of a yoga practice on any level!

A theme that will run through this training is an understanding of how and why joint pain, muscle stiffness and weakness, limited range of movement, and recurring pain patterns have a common root in the body’s protective reflexes — and what to do about it to restore strength, flexibility, and function.

This will include tools of assessment, tools of sequencing, and a deeper understanding of the dynamic, functional value of a yoga practice for everyday well-being.

The asana practices will reinforce your understanding of how these ideas can be put to practical use in an enjoyable and satisfying way — and will be oriented towards all of us who already have experience with asana practice. The practices will be manageable, but also include a satisfying degree of challenge. Ideas and applications for remedial work with less experienced students will be included in the active lectures.

Friday

Keys to Understanding Pain Syndromes — And Starting off on the right foot with Foundations in the Feet, Knees, and Hips

This session starts with an introduction to themes for the training on rediscovering freedom: the role of joint play and the arthrokinetic reflex for understanding pain syndromes and movement limitations, and what that means for a more insightful understanding of yoga practice.

From that introduction, we’ll proceed with the practical theme of new insights into how the feet work, and how this impacts the health of the knees — and hips.

This more dynamic account of the feet, with more accessible principles for working with them, will also pay off with insights into the knees and hips, with the feet being the keys to both the knees and hips.

This will include assessment principles, remedial exercises, and insightful asana practice embodying sequencing ideas.

Saturday

Loving the Low Back – The Torso is the Prime Mover

While we most often focus on the extremities — the legs and arms in relation to the hips and shoulders — the real driver of joint health in all of the body is the dynamic, functional movement of the torso.

This is about the many layers of the ‘Core,’ which includes not only the support of abdominal layers, but the role of the psoas and its ‘substitutes,’ back muscles, pelvic floor and diaphragm, hip muscles and functional myofascial lines that are the keys to understanding the logic of asana.

‘Loving the Low Back’ includes taking care of sacral freedom and stability, hip health, and issues of sciatic pain. And we’ll see through functional lines how actions of the upper body and shoulders are also key to supporting low back health.

All of these deeper insights into the torso and its role as the driver of movement will lead to some liberating rethinking of asana practice — moving from ‘old school’ concepts and instructions to ideas that fit and serve the body better.

Sunday

Upper Body Health — Head and Shoulders

The health of the neck and shoulders are intimately linked — and under constant challenges from everyday life. We’ll start with fundamental principles for working effectively with the shoulders in asana — working through and around common obstacles — reducing pain problems and wear-and-tear issues, while improving freedom and range of motion.

Then we’ll move into the health of the neck, especially from the perspective of the ‘Upper Crossed Syndrome’ — and what to do about it. This will be practical work for the neck, and will tie into the supplementary videos regarding contemporary health challenges and the health of the nervous system in connection with the breath and neck alignment.

Schedule for each day:

Each day will begin with an asana practice that introduces or incorporates ideas at the heart of the training, so that you will have an experience of how you can weave these ideas into your own practice or classes.

The learning section will include both learning and doing, with illustrated notes provided for your study.

The day will end with a yoga nidra practice — along with some explanation of the value and importance of the practice, as well as the fundamental principles for guiding students simply and deeply into yoga nidra.

Additional Learning Materials

Also included is a series of pre-recorded videos on the contemporary health challenges post-covid that are posed by dysfunction in the autonomic nervous system, leading not only to the symptoms that afflict 1/3 of people who have been infected with covid, but the same types of problems that afflicted people prior to covid, but were under appreciated and misunderstood. We’ll be looking at the tools that yoga has to offer in dealing with these, and at the significant contribution that yoga can make to health in this area in the future.

This will be available for viewing, with notes included, one week prior to the training.

Sustained and Sustainable Learning

All practices and lectures will be recorded with high quality video and audio, edited, and made available to all participants of the training — both live and online — for six months after the training itself.

Moving with Grief: Mindfulness and Movement Practices for Working with Grief & Loss (IN-PERSON)

Friday, December 16th, 2022
5:30-8:00pm
All Are Welcome
Cost: $40

Grief I’ve learned is just love. It’s all the love you want to give but cannot. All of that unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and in that hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go.~Anonymous

By gathering in community, we make space for ourselves and for each other to process and transform individual grief, together. In this way we can create a resonant space for transformation and healing, wherever you are in your process.

This workshop offers yoga practices as somatic tools to address the physical, mental and emotional dimensions of grief. Weaving together the practices of movement, breath and sound, the class will offer empowering techniques to explore grief in a supportive environment. Our intention is that you may leave feeling a greater sense of freedom and a deeper connection to yourself & your community.

This class will move at a thoughtful pace. No experience necessary – all practices will be accessible and optional.

This inclusive workshop welcomes all who have experienced any kind of grief or loss in their life.

* Participants are invited to bring a journal, a pen and an object of significance for a grief altar (optional). Wear comfortable clothing that is easy to move in.

Working with Five Core Motivations

Archetypes are patterns of influence that are ancient and universal. They are symbolic principles at work in the background of our awareness that grip us, motivate and stir us. Ancient Greeks, like Plato, called archetypes “forms” and considered them to be the fundamental characteristics of a thing that were imprinted on each soul before they were incarnated. In the ancient texts of India there is a Sanskrit word which means an original imprint, something ancient and ahead of all others, a prototype. This word, purvaja, can be found in the Rig Veda, and is perhaps the closest correlate to archetype in the yogic tradition.

Archetypes are communicated from the subconscious to the conscious mind through symbolism.

We can use our yoga practice to activate various archetypes in our lives, moving them from a latent subconscious state to one that is consciously integrated into our personality.

In this weekend intensive, we will explore the archetypes of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars which symbolically represent five urges or core motivations of the human psyche.

  • The urge to cultivate a healthy sense of Self (Sun)
  • The desire for emotional equilibrium (Moon)
  • The impulse to perceive the world around us (Mercury)
  • The longing for peace and enjoyment in life (Venus)
  • The compulsion to assert one’s personal will (Mars)

Each session will include:

  • Yoga philosophy related to archetypes and self-awareness
  • An introduction to the archetypes of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars
  • Embodiment practices to bring the archetypes alive in body and mind through carefully selected yoga asana, pranayama, mudra, bandha, and bhavana (guided imagery).
  • Suggestions for how to bring archetypal awareness into one’s personal yoga practice
  • Suggestions for how to incorporate archetypal awareness into group practices through guided imagery, postures, pranayama, mudra, and verbal cues

Come learn about the fascinating world of hypermobility, what it means to have a hypermobility syndrome, and how yoga can best support people who have them. Too often, bendy people struggle with injury and pain related to their yoga practice, but when practiced wisely, yoga can help them thrive in all areas of life!

This workshop is designed for all yoga teachers, as well as bendy practitioners interested in learning how yoga can play a positive role in their lives. We will begin Friday evening with an overview of hypermobility and the most common hypermobility syndromes including Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder.

Saturday morning, we’ll discuss the bendy body’s structural challenges related to its connective tissue makeup, to understand why it’s more prone to injury. Then we will dive into key asana principles to cultivate joint stability and limit injury risk. We’ll also explore active vs. passive stretching, verbal cues and sequencing to maximize the benefits of asana for this population.

In Saturday afternoon’s session, we’ll delve into the bendy body’s sensory challenges and explore how slow, mindful movement can help improve proprioception, motor control, and interoceptive accuracy. We will investigate how wise use of hands on assists can support bendy practitioners’ body awareness and sense of empowerment.

In our final session on Sunday morning, we’ll get into the unique nervous system physiology of people with hypermobility syndromes to understand why they are more prone to conditions such as chronic pain, anxiety, digestive disorders, and more. We’ll explore pranayama and self-massage to address some of these challenges, and reflect on the yamas and niyamas to optimize self care.Throughout the weekend, we’ll unpack how common misconceptions about yoga often lead to suffering for bendy practitioners (and others) and reflect on important questions: What is yoga about? How can we use its tools for greater understanding, acceptance, and transformation? Each session will include lecture and practice, and there’ll be plenty of time for discussion.

Learning objectives:

After studying numerous styles of yoga over the last 15 years, always with a leaning towards sustainable practices, Tucker now focuses on teaching the Kaiut Yoga Method. This method is focused on longevity and long-term mobility rather than quick fixes, and along with Tucker’s other studies serves as the inspiration for the content of this training.

This module presents twenty sequences for students to take away for home practice. It is complementary to other Longevity Yoga modules, but previous modules are not required in order to attend this one.

Designed as a practice intensive, this training will include 4+ hours of practice per day along with lectures and discussions that explore theory and technique.

What You Will Learn:

  • Principles of the Kaiut method

  • Unlearning Yoga to learn Longevity Yoga

  • Reframe the art of teaching, examine your approach to guiding students, and explore ways to improve

  • Study philosophy of Yoga and how it relates to this method

Please note: Kaiut teacher training can only be offered by the founder of the method. Therefore, this 300hr module is designed to be an introduction to Kaiut for teachers of other yoga modalities, and it will present information that is outside of but complementary to the Kaiut Method. This is the perfect place to start for those who are curious about the method. For those who practice Kaiut this is also an excellent way to dive deeper.

Creating Trans Inclusive Yoga Communities

Creating Trans Inclusive Yoga Communities

Saturday, October 29, 2022 | 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Price: $60

In this workshop, we will cover how to create welcoming and affirming spaces for Queer, Trans, and Gender Non-conforming folks (QTGNC). This workshop is geared towards yoga teachers and students alike. We all have the ability to create the safer spaces for all, and in fact it’s our responsibility.

We’ll discuss definitions like Transgender (trans) and cisgender, the importance of pronouns, and gender neutral language.

One in four LGBTQIA+ youth in the US identify as non-binary or gender non-conforming. About 5% of US youth identify as trans or non-binary. About 42% of Americans know someone who is transgender. Is it you? Even if it’s not you yet, this number is rising and it’s good to be informed. You’ll feel less awkward and be more comfortable befriending a trans person if you have the appropriate tools to do so. For example, if you’re in a group setting and you’re being asked to share your pronouns for the first time, you won’t be embarrassed when you don’t remember what that means.

Asheville has a very large trans community. How do we make Asheville and AYC a safer space for TGNC folks? Learn about issues confronting the community locally and nationally and what you can do about it. If you’re like many people wanting to help but at a loss, this is your opportunity to educate yourself on actionable steps you can take to live out your yoga — on and off the mat.

This workshop will give you tangible steps to be an ally based on the yoga principles, the Yamas and Niyamas, such as Ahimsa and Satya. It will help you best honor ahimsa by respecting people’s pronouns and being compassionate to their life journey. Using the correct pronouns is Satya, the truth of their identity.

Join for a live session where you can get your questions answered and can walk away feeling empowered to make Asheville Yoga Center more inclusive for all. Folks in the yoga world often place a lot of emphasis on masculine and feminine energy which can perpetuate false ideals like the gender binary. Bring a sense of curiosity, show up authentically, and be ready for unlearning.

Participants will learn about:

  • definitions: trans 101
  • difference between sex and gender, gender identity and expression
  • thinking beyond the gender binary
  • what do transgender and cisgender mean?
  • what are pronouns? why do they matter?
  • why do we include pronouns in our e-mail signatures?
  • trans inclusive/ gender neutral language
  • misgendering and what to do about it
  • accountability and harm
  • social location/ positionality and why it’s important in spiritual community
  • accessible bathrooms and changing facilities
  • transitioning social and medically including body dysphoria
  • small steps to take to be a trans ally (like put your pronouns in your bio)
  • anti-trans legislation and inequality that Trans folks face (legal name and gender marker changes, financial insecurity, health care, workplace discrimination, etc)

All folks will walk away with a general understanding of the trans experience. Individuals present will increase their ability to talk about trans folks, use gender affirming vocabulary and how to advocate for TGNC folks.
